Choosing Types of Pigs that Make Good Pets
Pigs are taking the exotic pet world by storm, but despite the fact that there are numerous types of pigs in the world, not all of them make suitable family pets. A farm sow, for instance, can grow to be more than half a ton in weight and eats an astronomical amount of food in a single day. Problems like this are the reason it’s important to research types of pigs before purchasing one for your family.
Miniature and potbellied pigs come in a variety of breeds and generally make the best pets of all the different types of pigs on the market. Most have sweet, docile dispositions and their relatively small size means that large amounts of land aren’t required to keep them happy. The following is a brief overview of different types of pet-friendly pigs.
The Vietnamese Potbellied Pig
Perhaps the most common pig choice for family pet, the Vietnamese potbelly was originally introduced to the Americas in the 1980s. These pigs were not actually intended for use as family pets, but rather as stock for different animal parks. Plans evolved however, and the import of these pigs resulted in continued import of other miniature breeds.
The Vietnamese potbellied pigs are a particularly adorable breed of pig. Standing an average of 14 inches with a weight of 50 lbs, these animals have an exaggerated ball of a belly with a swayed back. This makes the animal look like it is overweight (common signs in other animals), but this is a normal and healthy appearance for this breed. In addition to their appearance, their personalities are very docile; an attractive feature to many people.
The Painted Miniature Pig
The painted miniature, or Juliani pig, are another popular choice for many people. They have loveable personalities with a tendency and desire to play with toys. In addition to this, they can be very small. On average they grow to be 10 – 16 inches in height and only 15 – 50 lbs in weight depending on various factors. If you choose this breed, be sure to have plenty of pig-friendly objects and toys around for them to play with or they will take to entertaining themselves.
The African Pygmy
The African pygmy, or Guinea hog as it is sometimes called, is an especially small breed of pig. These animals only grow up to 40 lbs in weight, with a height of up to 22 inches. They are incredibly social animals and get along with most people, although they are fiercely loyal to their owners and prefer their company above all others’. As well as being loyal, they are also very intelligent and active creatures. Unlike potbellied pigs, the African pygmy does not have a swayed back, but rather a straight back.
The Ossabaw Island Pig
The Ossabaw Island pig is certainly not for everyone, but its long lifespan will be very welcoming to some people. They live up to 25 years with proper care and good nutrition, so the ideal owners need to be ready to make a long term commitment if they choose this breed. In addition to its lifespan this pig is also a bit larger than the previously mentioned breeds, growing to be up to 90 lbs in weight and 14-20 inches in height. They are incredibly smart pigs and can be trained to do various things with a little patience and hard work.
Regardless of your choice of pig, it’s very important to remember that housing and caring for a pig is quite different from caring for a pet dog or cat. They require a bit more care and maintenance, but this can be prepared for by reading up on the subject. It is highly recommended that you research the positives and negatives of pet pig ownership before investing in one. Various guides are available through the internet and your local library.
